Topic: Claws alternative?

Dear all,

Lately, I've been a bit annoyed with Claws. These are the problems I'm running into:

1) It crashes when you click on a mail (sub) folder, say 'friends' and while it's loading that, you click on another folder, say 'work'.
2) It's quite slow in loading mail folders
3) It has poor support for HTML (reading only, and even that fails from time to time)
4) Sending mail with attachments is horribly slow: it takes for ever before the actual send screen pops up (it almost looks like it's uploading it twice)

Does anybody know of a lightweight (because that's part of the #! philosophy) mail client, that is fast (both in starting, and in handling a big inbox with a lot of sub folders?

I'm posting it here in the Feedback / suggestions part of the forum, because I think we must be able to find something better for this excellent distro!

The obvious alternative is Thunderbird 3 tongue

+1

I've tried many like claws, and they all fall short. Thunderbird has been the easiest to configure by far for me. Mutt scares me neutral

Re: Claws alternative?

i agree thunderbird is very nice and is alot easier to set up at that.

failure is only a negative way to describe a learning experience.
i am constantly learning. smile

Re: Claws alternative?

+1 to thunderbird with Firetray addon to minimize it to tray.

Re: Claws alternative?

Thanks for the replies.

Question about Thunderbird: the one in the repo's is a way older version than the one on the mozilla websites. Is there a good reason for the older version in the repo's?

Re: Claws alternative?

Afaik version 3 just came out  a few days ago. Question should be, why No. 3 isn't in the repos yet...

Re: Claws alternative?

If I'm not mistaken, you can use Ubuntuzilla to install the latest version

And just an idea, but what does everyone else say about replacing Claws with Thunderbird in a future release?

Re: Claws alternative?

Personally, I don't know how heavy Thunderbird is on the sys. resources. But Claws just has a couple of annoying shortcomings. Another one, that I did not list above: it doesn't load attachments in the background. So if you click on a new e-mail with attachment, you can't click away and read your other mails, you have to wait till the downloading is done.

But let's keep our options open: are there other alternatives?

To be true, i´m very satisfied with claws and in fact like it better than Thunderbird (haven´t tried TB3 so far). For me no crashes, i got used to waiting for all new mails to be downloaded before reading (enough other stuff to do meanwhile...). Also doesn´t seem slow to me. Coming from windows, i find html-mails a bit suspicious (virii...), so poor writing support is no prob for me...

As for alternatives: have not found any til now. I would like to see Foxmail ported to Linux, since that´s my favourite in Windows. Runs under wine,  but is not really useable, since it refuses to accept attachments when writing new mails.

You can add the mozilla daily build ppa and update it to the next version, or the bleeding edge version if you like

If i remember correctly, when i tried SimpleMail, it did not have multiple accounts (which it should have now). Also - since i use to delete all history informations on firefox-shutdown, simplemail always had forgotten the account settings on next start.

Anyway, i will give it a try again. smile

EDIT: Just tried it - still looses account information when history is cleaned automatically.... sad

It never has for me, I don't see how that could even be possible?
You make the settings in the addon itself...

I use it to access five different accounts btw. cool

Re: Claws alternative?

I always thought claws were the more advanced choice? Newer used either, as I am a gmail fanboy. But now I need to do some bulk email to clients. Not enough to bother with phplist - but enough not to be satisfied with gmail.

I actually did that last night. 3.1 gives me a error message when I try  to setup my account. 3.0 is also in that repo. I'll see you that goes. If it doesn't work, I'll post the error message here. Maybe some of you will know what is going on.

Just did another test: when i allow firefox to keep formular-data and passwords, SimpleMail keeps its account settings. Seems like this information is stored somewhere in the firefox history files. I would like to rather have this info stored in a separate place...  Otherwise a fine alternative!

Re: Claws alternative?

Claws is the alternative mail client IMO. Alternative to Evolution, Thunderbird and Outlook (heawy weight).

Whoops, that firetray fried Thunderbird 3.0

It's says: "Segmentation fault" now when I want to run it...

Why do you clear your passwords though? Simple Mail keeps your account settings in Firefox's password manager so just don't clear that.
