Re: Claws alternative?

Personally what I do is just use SeaMonkey. The way I see it, there isn't much point in using several programs i.e FF + Claws or FF +TB3, etc when one program does browsing, mail, chat, newsgroups, HTML composition, and just about anything else with add-ons, and on top of that it is only a 13mb download. The one in the Ubuntu repos is a bit outdated though, I recommend downloading directly from Mozilla.org

The mail client in SM is a bit basic, but that is what I like about it. The controls are intuitive and it just works, I don't need it to paint flames on the screen when I get spam or anything fancy like that. The way I see it it, there isn't anything more "light" than combining these resources in one program, unless that is, the computers sole job is to check your mail, and not do things like surf the web.

Just did another test: when i allow firefox to keep formular-data and passwords, SimpleMail keeps its account settings. Seems like this information is stored somewhere in the firefox history files. I would like to rather have this info stored in a separate place...  Otherwise a fine alternative!

Why do you clear your passwords though? Simple Mail keeps your account settings in Firefox's password manager so just don't clear that.

I just feel better not saving any passwords on my comp... But you're right, should make no difference, if my account information is stored in the mozilla or any other folder... neutral

2) It's quite slow in loading mail folders

Quick Q: did you originally set up Claws with IMAP? I  had that going yesterday for my gmail and it was pretty killer slow...just switched to POP3 and it's a lot faster, like email should be. I also think there's an html rendering plugin for Claws as well, but I haven't tried that yet. Anyways, just some thoughts if you're considering sticking with claws at all

Yes, I've set it up as IMAP. I think my student mail doesn't even support POP3 anymore, so I'm kind of stuck with that... I do have the HTML plugin installed. It's a bit hit and miss. Sometimes it just gives me a lot of chinese looking characters.. Usually it works though. But sometimes I like to send HTML mail and as far as I know, it doesn't support that.

The minimize to tray plugin for Thunderbird fried the program (can't run it at all), so I'm considering staying. But the post above here about Sea Monkey sounds promising, so I'll check that out as well.

I am using Sylpheed

It is very Claws-ish, though smile

Re: Claws alternative?

I'll probably be shot down in flames but I'm using Evolution as an alternative to Claws.

I connect to an Exchange Server at work and I found that with the Evolution Exchange plugin, I had no problems connecting. Trying to connect to the server with Claws and using IMAP was a major ball ache.

Re: Claws alternative?

sylpheed of course, very fast and stable

if you want the most recent version you can add this  ppa launchpad repositorie

That's because Sylpheed and Claws are both forks of the same program.

Re: Claws alternative?

Claws certainly has its shortcomings.  It is lightweight and loads fast, but the speed at which it checks folders and sends mail is reminiscent of dialing in.  And that they act like IMAP is an obscurity is counterintuitive; I had to search a few forums just to figure out how to get that working.  These guys don't put too much into having their app be user-friendly.

I love Thunderbird, it is my e-mail client of choice for many reasons.  However, it is a bit heavy for the old box that Crunchbang has helped me to resurrect.  I would agree with Igor that Claws is an alternative.  I'd like a better one too, one that doesn't use a web browser.  Isn't the point of an e-mail client to not have to use a web browser to check e-mail anyway?

Re: Claws alternative?

#33 It has many things in common, I agree
but sylpheed is very easy to use and IMHO better than Claws
It's worth trying I think

Re: Claws alternative?

Till today I was not able to move place of folders where mails are stored in claws mail (I store them on a special partition, so that I can chage OS as I want)
due to this reason I use Thunderbird 3

Do somebody know if it s possible? I didnt find any explanation on the web.

If claws and Sylpheed are so similar, how can people propose sylpheed as an alternative of claws mail???

Re: Claws alternative?

If claws and sylpheed are so similar, why is the one forked from the other? Try and compare. For me Sylpheed does its job quicker than Claws. So it is an alternative. Like Mint to Ubuntu. Freedom of choice. [...]

Re: Claws alternative?

Thanks for informations between claws and Sylpheed,

for first question as nobody still answered so it seems that it s not possible to specify and location of Mail folder in claws/sylpheed in other place than /home.....

Maybe it could be a suggestion for next releases?

EDIT:  Sylpheed on first start asks, where to put the mail folders. Claws does not!  Using claws atm, i think i'll change over to sylpheed, since i like to have my mails on a seperate partition just like my documents. So thanks for your question about this! big_smile

I understand the logic. I've just installed Opera 10.10 ('stable') using the instructions at

http://deb.opera.com/

except that their line to add the repository key should read

wget -O - http://deb.opera.com/archive.key | sudo apt-key add -

Opera has an e-mail client as well as seamonkey. I'm not sure how robust the client is as most of my e-mail goes to a gmail account.

Re: Claws alternative?

i went with thunderbird as well.  i couldn't find a way to get claws to tunnel through SSH.  an important safety measure when i'm out with the netbook, IMO.

Sorry for bumping an old thread, but maybe this info could be interesting for some people: Just found, that also with claws it's possible, to have the mail folders in another place than /home.

1. With your filemanager create a new folder for your mail account on your preferred location (or partition).
2. File/New Mailbox/MH...
3. Into the upcoming dialog insert the location from step one (like e.g. "/media/Backup/Mail") and hit OK
4. Now either create a new account and under "Receive" as standard - inbox - location  search for the folder from step 3....
5. ...or, for existing accounts, copy your mail-folder under /home/user/ to your preferred location and change the account settings according to step 4.
6. Change the folder locations for sent/queue/draft/trash in your account settings under "advanced".

That should have it done.

Re: Claws alternative?

Thanks for all the input!

I might give Thunderbird another try. Last time the (beta?) of the last TB hang on me on installation... Let's see if a newer version will do the trick!

The speed issue is bugging me the most with Claws.
