Topic: squeezebang is now testing

hey all. i'm new to the forums though not to the #!'ers on irc who know me as 'bluejeans' 
/me pauses to say hi to everbody..
anyway. i have been experimenting over the last couple of months with debian based builds of #! both with lenny and squeeze. i have been pretty happy with the setup and just recently started playing with a remastering tool so as to be able to share the fun.
this build is based on debian squeeze which is still in testing but, as you know (if you know debian,) its quite stable. this was build within the last week so all packages are up to date.
>2.6.32 kernel
you will find the desktop layout similar to #!-lite.. only a bit shinier and with a few new tools.
there are still many things that need to be tweaked to perfect this system so feel free to chip in or whatever... i'm not looking to start my own group or anything.. just very willing to contribute something back to my fellow linuxites who i've learned so much with over the years...

the iso i'm posting is just a livecd... once we get some feedback and its polished up i will put out an install cd but first there's some bugs to work out... also, the size (486MB) is a bit large.. but that's partly due to the extra tools and patches i added to get it functional.. once the official squeeze is otu we can slim it down more..

Good luck with your project, brotherinbluejeans. Myself, I'm dual booting into Sidux XFCE and an Arch+Openbox setup. I primarily use Arch, though XFCE with a small/hidden panel (containing only a system tray) in the far right + Docky seems to be working very nicely. Almost as minimalistic as my Openbox setup. Not much difference between the two, though XFCE does tend to resolve some issues I had with odd artifacts showing up when maximizing Google Chrome. The compositing works much better too.

At any rate, I wish you the best. Though I intend on keeping my present setup, I'll download the livecd and may contribute to your project, time permitting smile

ult: i have been playing with arch some myself too... i like it but am still looking for the right setup.

all: known issues (in case you notice or want to pitch in..)
*there are some errors on booting that i haven't looked into.. all seems to run fine though.
*double entry in menu.xml (just fixed)
*oblogout is not configured with user wheel... (shutdown/reboot only as root.) config is in /etc/oblogout.conf and ofcourse visudo if somebody wants to play with it befor ei get around to it paste me you can paste me it.
*gnome-power-manager applets runs but icon is not visible in tray..
*aterm config in .Xdefaults is screwy
*might be missing some audio tools... haven't tested yet.
* conkyrc needs some tlc
*background image was just random file i pulled off the net... should be changed.

I can't remember, but I think that I added this to /etc/sudoers once to fix the issue with needing to be root to properly execute oblogout.

username*     ALL=NOPASSWD: /sbin/shutdown -h now, /sbin/reboot

or...

username*     ALL=NOPASSWD: /sbin/halt, /sbin/reboot

* USER instead of your username may work, but I can't recall

... can't really remember which was needed. I'm not using oblogout at present, but you should be able to figure it out easy enough.

As far as gnome-power-manager is concerned, there is a setting in the preferences that determines the applets visibility in the tray (I'm using xfce4-power-manager at the moment, so I can't offer specifics). Hope this helps!

well today i performed two hd install with a basic installer... works ok great on the big machine but my little lappy (512 ram) kept stalling..  seems to be working fine for now while i try out different installers
*more editing done to menu
*customized boot menu
*weeded out some files and caches... took 50MB off the iso size (now 432MB)
*edited /etc/skel
*ln -s /usr/share/backgrounds/ to images/wallpaper .. ditto in /etc/skel
* messed with sudoers..

i was trying this:
User_alias          POWER = tux
root                    ALL=(ALL) ALL
tux                      ALL=(ALL) ALL
POWER               ALL= NOPASSWD: /sbin/reboot, /sbin/shutdown

^^ with idea that tux has sudo privilages and any new users han add themselves to the POWER User_Alias.. but its not working yet.
not going to upload this evening's updated iso yet though.. better get some more done tomorrow first and i'll upload it then

uploaded new iso with some mods and fixes...
text based installer works 'sudo remastersys-installer intl'  -run gparted first to prepare your partitions (if needed)

non-free firmware does not load when booting live. (working on this )

new iso image is 436MB .. will post torrent soon but for now http is available at http://www.hungry.com/~daniel/squeezebang/  user: tux | pass: tux | root: root

next on todo list is a prettier, graphical installer.

hi bluejeans.

Here is some feedback on Squeezebang 1.01

During  the install of Squeezebang, by running command " sudo remastersys-installer intl " everything works accordingly. However, after first boot, the user tux:tux does not have a home directory. I guess remastersys fails to create a user home directory for the user.

Since the install fails to install the home directory, all you ' default ' settings are wiped sad . Has anyone else encounter this ?

I have to say this version of debian looks promising, and want to thank you for taking the time to compile this.

Is there ever going to be a amd64 version ?  :crosses fingers:

i guess i didn't notice that tux's home is erased because i always create a new user directly after an install.. note: tux's settings are the default in /etc/skel/ (except the firefox theme) so you you will get exactly the same settings for any new user you create. .. (or it you wanted to stay with tux then just 'mkdir /home/tux' and 'cp -r /etc/skel/* /home/tux/' and you'll be good to go.
-for the record: to add new user after install, reboot and at gdm login screen hit 'ctl-alt-f2', login as 'root' pass: 'root' and enter 'adduser <desired_username>' then hit 'ctl-alt-f7' to return to gdm screen and loging as newly created user.

64bit plans: yes. i will happily make a 64bit version. right now i'm just waiting for a little more feedback so i can get the 32-bit debugged as i'd rather not have to debug two versions at once.

[Bug Report - Minor] When creating a new user after installation the operator must delete the .moc folder from /etc/skel otherwise the operator will not be able to create a new user.

   Question: I want to create an x64 version of SqueezeBang. Is this a fairly easy thing to create - I mean squeezebang. Or is there a lot of work that goes into it?
   I was planning on doing a netinstall of squeeze. Then find some tutorials that describe installing openbox, then go from there. Any hints, clues, or tips as to what to avoid, suggestions, etc?

tshann, net install is the way to go.. it istn' hard to get xorg, xserver, pcmanfm, openbox etc... the trick is NOT getting all the gnome junk that it wants to download as dependencies.. (you can easiely end up with a 3 gig system if you're not careful.)  on the other hand, i'm goign to start on the 64 bit and should have a working base in a days or two if you want to wait for that...  always glad to help if you have any Q's..

Here is yet another (odd) bug..

I added some repos, and did some apt-get upgrade & dist-upgrade 's a like. I decided not to use the tux:tux user as reported earlier.. so i deleted the account ( userdel tux ), However when debian was trying to update wicd, it reported the following error...

Not sure the long term fix .. Maybe tux is tied to the startup process wicd ?

These notes and scripts are Xfce specific but could be easily adapted to Openbox. They may give you some tips and a starting point at least smile

9812713: regarding wicd error.

this would be a wicd error rather than the system i believe. its that wicd only runs as root or by users who are in the "netdev" group.. (when adding ner users be sure that they are included in "netdev") but regarding your problem i believe this is because when reinstalling it searches for users in 'netdev' to grant them access.. (and of course 'tux' has been removed but wicd will still see him in /etc/group)  you should be able to fix this by editing /etc/group and remove tux's name from  netdev line.

64bit is now out... and its a cleaner build than the 32bit. -fixed allot fo little stuff (now i need to go back to the 32bit and do the same.

i finally found the answer to the oblogout issue: gdm comes with its own permissions so instead of running reboot/shutdown as root we use 'gdm-control --reboot && openbox --exit' and 'gdm-control --shutdown && openbox --exit'  ( i.e. send command to wm and  display manager to shutdown rather than to the system.)
