Topic: What do you use your netbook for?

Hello all netbook users,

I thought I would start a thread to find out what uses people are putting their netbooks to.

Here is my contribution

* Portable internet radio (useful when pottering around the house, i.e. painting etc)

(using eeepc1000H running cruncheee 8.10.01rc)

Cheers

Re: What do you use your netbook for?

i bought an eee900 for my son, mostly intended for schoolwork and such.. he mostly use it for youtube tho..  wink
my wife/gf use it ALOT for general surfing..totally abandoning her vista-infected hp pavillion tx1020..
it still sports the default xandros, but CB is very soon going to be installed big_smile

Re: What do you use your netbook for?

browsing the web, learning linux, watching movie on the train, taking notes at the university

Re: What do you use your netbook for?

majority of the stuff i do at uni. Includes :-

- coding
- executing that code
- taking notes
- surfin the internets
- learning linux

tbh its my main pc these days, it comes with me everywhere... even around my house.

Using an eee 1000h (yes the one that came with windows and a HD), works perfectly with cruncheee

Re: What do you use your netbook for?

It's my laptop, I do as I do on my main PC with it. 800x480 isn't that restrictive when you get used to it smile

Re: What do you use your netbook for?

I bought ours for my wife, and she's currently resisting all attempts to put #! on it as our printer only works under windows....

So, basically, my lovely shiny new Inspiron Mini 9 is being used as a print server roll

Like Nik_Doof is my laptop, I use my AAO for everything. The other laptop is just my desktop replacer at home.

Re: What do you use your netbook for?

it's become my main computer as well. I'm able to do everything on it I used my old laptop for.

edit: I've got a mini 9

Re: What do you use your netbook for?

I have an eeePC 701 which I actually got from work :-)  We have over 30 of them at our school.
I use it with my 'Three' 3G dongle to get online anywhere. It's mainly used to view the web, update twitter etc.
I have used it with stickam.com and Skype to broadcast to my friends from around the house.
It also make a great video player on the plane or train.  It's battery life is great.
I use eeebuntu NBR on it. I will be putting CrunchBang on my old laptop though.

Re: What do you use your netbook for?

my eee pc 1000 is used with a USB->serial adaptor to control a Ten Tec RX320 receiver or Argonaut V transceiver for PSK31 operation - the long run time w/the Atom CPU and 6600MAh battery provides for a full afternoon when operating portable in the field - lots of fun!

Re: What do you use your netbook for?

Interesting to see that the netbooks are being used as desktop replacement. Initially, I only used my netbook for the 'netbook type tasks'.

Now my Mac is sitting rather redundant...

my gf uses the eee when my wife is away wink  ..no just kidding..hahaha...well im technically not married, but in reality i am.. together for 17th year wink

Re: What do you use your netbook for?

I use mine for all kinds of things that one would do with a "normal" laptop, and even though it is not my main notebook, it is especially handy with putty/rdesktop and EVDO modem to throw it in the glove compartment and be able to connect to any of the servers at work from pretty much wherever I am. Reading eBooks is something else I use it quite often for, but I still have to figure out how I can do that the same way as I have set it up in windows, with the screen and touchpad rotated by 90 degrees so it can be held and read like a regular book...

Re: What do you use your netbook for?

have you looked into useing fbreader to do your book reading? it supports screen rotation. If you have an app you need to use for reading that doesn't support rotation you can look into this http://projects.openmoko.org/projects/pygtk-rotate/ .

Re: What do you use your netbook for?

I bought my AA1 to keep me and the mrs on talking terms smile
The rubbish TV programs she watches used to make me wander upstairs onto my desktop. At least now I can sit with her, the only downside is I have to listen to Big Brother. Not watch, listen wink

Re: What do you use your netbook for?

I'm using my Eee for notes, learning linux, occasional gaming and watching movies when I'm travelling... I'd like to use it when I'm doing fieldwork and have to download data from various data loggers, but I don't know enough about linux yet for it being an alternative to pen and paper

Re: What do you use your netbook for?

I have Eee 900 and I use it for everything...email, 'net surfing, irc, etc.

Re: What do you use your netbook for?

Hi,
I bought my eeepc to use it when I travel, since i'm regularly spending time in airports and planes. I have another laptop (15''4 screen), with now about 15 minutes of autonomy on battery, so it only stays at home on sector.

These days, I use the netbook a lot at home, to discover linux mainly. Finally I'm getting used to it, web pages even appear to be too large when I get back to my bigger laptop.

I also want to make it ready for development (I have a vector graphics development project already started in SVG+Javascript, and I also want to create a small website). I think I won't do image processing on the netbook, I tried Gimp and the screen is really too small.

To sum up, the netbook seems to be powerful enough for any use, the only serious limit is the screen size.

Re: What do you use your netbook for?

I still have my Asus EEE PC 701 with me.  I use it for surfing, blogging, IMing, watching videos, syncing to my iPod Touch, making documents, and more, more stuff!

Re: What do you use your netbook for?

I bought my eee901 because my current "main" laptop weighs more than all the moons of Jupiter put together, and has, in the words of Strong Bad - "an impressive battery life of one half of 10 minutes". Ok, maybe I exaggerate slightly, but you get my point.

I mostly use if for web browsing, learning python and linux, and keeping my IM/webcam conversations going with my gf without being forced to stay in my room all the time. So far, it's proved to be the best self-indulgent purchase I've made in a long while smile

Re: What do you use your netbook for?

The main use of my Aspire One is during travel. I do not hesitate to throw it in my car or take it with me on extended motorcycle rides. Of course it's also used around the house but I already have 2 desktops and a full size laptop so it's not used as my main computer.

Re: What do you use your netbook for?

I use my AA1 as my main laptop, and now my "old" and heavy one is sitting behind the TV acting as a media player + P2P server + music streaming to the other laptops (including my AA1)

The things that I do are mainly surfing the internet, email, note taking and reading while on the go. It also supports my Novatel Ovation 3G USB modem, giving me full connectivity everywhere.

I even use it when I work from home, accessing the CISCO VPN with network manager and OpenOffice.

The keyboard is perfect for me. Although it would be better to have a bigger screen, I can deal with it most of the times.

Re: What do you use your netbook for?

I use my Eee 901 more and more lately (#! a big part of that!). Primarily I use it to ssh/scp to different servers, but also web browsing/mail, IM, IRC, watching video, playing World of Goo, unloading images from my digital camera and phone, taking notes, customizing... almost everything I use a computer for on a casual level. It's great to quickly show stuff, local or online, when normally it would be too much to access a desktop/workstation.
