An xfce session is there at the moment but an openbox session is also in in the pipeline ![]()
edit: oops, I missed that in the announcement

The move from Ubuntu to Debian has been quite a big change in itself and I am currently working on refining the build process. Other changes are up for discussion, hence these new forums. ![]()
If you would like to make any suggestions, please do so. ![]()
Perhaps this thread might serve as a good place for what apps we might want included in the new SqueezeBang?

It's hard to make suggestions. Crunchbang is almost perfect in its current status... ![]()

^ or open a new one specifically for that purpose ![]()
^^ Igor just made one ![]()
What about a Lite version? I would love to have a debian based crunchbang with smaller footprint ![]()
Also is "statler" going to be with custom-build kernel?
maybe the return of Rox-Filer
(i know i know, i'm the only Rox fan

Nice one Arp, I knew I could rely on you! ![]()

No plans for a lite version, yet. Regarding the kernel, it does at the moment, but only because the current revision for Squeeze it totally screwy. Statler's repository is currently holding a rebuilt kernel from Sid. The alpha images will most likely ship with this.
With regard to the kernel, I'd love to see a version that has automatic TRIM capability for those of us with SSD's. I believe automatic TRIM is incorporated in the 2.6.33 kernel.
I have seen squeezebang mentioned on the forums. But I would like to offer another name.
ScrunchBang

ScrunchBang
Could still be Crunchbang for that matter...
It should be CrunchBang, Squeezebang sounds way too violent.
What happens to apps people install from Launchpad ppa repositories?
Are they Ubuntu-specific, or work with Debian too?
There's also Mediabuntu for things like the W32codecs, and the Wine repos. Would they still work OK?
I was not saying that the name of crunchbang should be changed. I just thought scrunchbang sounded better than squeezebang.
Things sometimes look better in my head but my fingers cant get the translation right on the screen. ![]()

Never mix Ubuntu and Debian repositories (in my opinion). ![]()
The reason so many PPAs exist is that Ubuntu is not rolling release. Once a rolling Debian 'Bang is available, you won't have to manually track down every application you want a newer version. You'll get it automatically through regular updates, or if you're impatient, you can apt-pin and pull a specific package from unstable or even experimental. The way that most Ubuntu users do it is a terrible system, IMHO, mixing a nice stable debian derived repository with all kinds of random 3rd party ppas they read about in some guy's blog.

By rolling you mean a #! tied to Debian "testing", not to any particular release name? Are the apps in the Debian Testing repos newer than those in the current Ubuntu?
edit: while I was typing that you answered part of it in your edit ![]()

Correct, #! based on Debian Testing would be rolling release, meaning you install it once and can use it for years without reinstalling or doing a big release upgrade (like Ubuntu).
Deb. Testing and Ubuntu are roughly the same "freshness" but you can compare for yourself at distrowatch.com. ![]()
Debian has a multimedia repo that has the win32codecs and such in it. So there should be no trouble there. The main thing i would like to see is pcmanfm replaced with thunar but other than that i think Crunchbang is perfect.
The things i have the most interest in however is thew installer and apps like jockey-gtk. Does Ubiquity work in Debina testing? And i know jockey-gtk requires a package called linux-restricted-modules in Ubuntu but i have no idea how it could be made to work in Debian.

@slipshot - When I tried Debian unstable on my netbook, the installer found my Broadcom card automatically and asked if I wanted it to install the binary blob. As for Ubiquity, the closest thing I've seen to a Debian Live CD is Knoppix, so...

for the record: squeezebang was a side project and never actually a part of "crunchbang" crunchbang has always been just crunchbang.
also, i light of #! now changing its base to debian i will probably be discontinuing work in squeezebang... i sure what corenominal is workign on will far surpass my attempts.

LinuxAdvanced 9.2 is a livecd/usb/dvd with install options, with Xfce based on Lenny

A system based on testing will, IMHO, become diverged from release to releas, as it's not ment to be followed as a 'rolling release', especially not soon after a release. It will work, perhaps even well, but will need constant maintenance... Just like Ubuntu, a clear upgrade path is only planned and implemented when a release is due and the developers know what they're upgrading from/to.
Just my 2 p...
