Topic: Compiz messed up Openbox

I got a little hasty and installed Compiz, then I changed my mind a realized that I want to stick with Openbox. Did a sudo purge compiz and sudo apt-get autoremove to get rid of Compiz. The only problem now is that obviously Openbox won't start. I'm getting into my CrunchEee desktop, but the right click menus won't open and neither will the hotkeys (super+space). I tried with sudo dpkg--reconfigure openbox from command line (getting there by ctrl+alt+F2). But that didn't do it. Now I really don't know how to solve this.

Hello GuruX smile

I am guessing here as I have not tried to install Compiz myself, but what happens when you select "Openbox" from the drop-down session menu in GDM before logging in? Also, do you have the file '~/.dmrc' and what are the contents?

Re: Compiz messed up Openbox

Oh, I put my Eee on autologin. So I don't have that menu. When I look at /etc/gdm/gdm.conf it says:

AutomaticLoginEnable=false
AutomaticLogin=

So I guess the autologin isn't handled by GDM?

My ./dmrc looks like this

[Desktop]
Session=default

Re: Compiz messed up Openbox

Managed to get into the GDM.
I choose Openbox Session and language. GDM asks to make the settings default, and I choose to make default. But when I log in, nothing seems to have changed. And after reboot none of the settings have sticked in the GDM menues.

Re: Compiz messed up Openbox

Did Compiz pull in nautilus?  Metacity?

If so you might want to check Philip's post that dealt with overriding Nautilus' urge to take over your sytem.

I view KDE like I view snow. It looks fun and marvelous, it's fun to play in, but after a while I just want someone to take it all away.

Re: Compiz messed up Openbox

No it doesn't seem so. Can't find metacity nor nautilus installed in Synaptic.

I might be going for a fresh copy of CrunchEee tomrorow, just to solve this an easy way.

Re: Compiz messed up Openbox

Yeah, went for a fresh installation of CrunchEee today. Everything's back working like a charm!

Re: Compiz messed up Openbox

Nice one! Sorry we did not manage to sort the problem, but I am glad you have a working system again. smile Topic closed.
