Topic: Money management & budget program?

What money management program do most of the community rely on?
I've been looking into installing Gnucash, but I'm not sure if it may be
overkill for my needs--basically, I want to set up and keep track of a
spending budget for my monthly finances.

Input appreciated.

Hi,

GNUcash is really good for lots of financing issues.
However, if you just want to keep track of income, expenses and stuff: Why don't you just use an gnumeric (fast) excell? It is very easy and nearly everything is possible. Thats how I do that for my personal finances.

You're welcomed to look at the long list of accounting softwares in my webpage,

p.s. As of Fri 9:00pm PST, 50webs is down, but I'm sure it will be back up soon.  If not, I'll post the list.

GNUCash is great, but sometimes it is overkill...its like trying to be your own CPA

Buddi was one I looked into and never got around to trying - might be a good middle ground

Re: Money management & budget program?

yeah, I was looking at Buddi also and may give it a spin, Stopie.

Shen...that is one impressive list of links! Should perhaps post that as a sticky somewhere on CB forums.

It may not be a popular choice, but I use quicken with wine.  I have data going back to 1995 in Quicken, and I still  use it so it's been handy.

Gnucash is an overkill plus I hate double accounting.  I used to use CBT (checkbook tracking), but it hasn't a new version for awhile.  I'm using
buddi currently, but I'm looking at homebank.  Just haven't bothered to move yet.

Re: Money management & budget program?

You Need A Budget is the most comprehensive budgeting-specific program I have ever used. More important than the actual program is the underlying methodologies behind it. YNAB focuses on saving a buffer of one month's income or outflows, then zero-based budgeting last month's income. It can be found at http://www.youneedabudget.com. YNAB does cost $60 if you want to use it beyond the 7-day trial period, but it has saved me much more than that in my first month of using it, alone.

While great at budgeting (and arguably, that's where 90% +- 3% of your financial success stems from big_smile), it is not a comprehensive money management tool like Quicken is. For that, I use Mint.com. But, to be honest, I don't have much of an investment portfolio and YNAB has great spending and net worth reporting, so Mint is not much more than an alert site for when my transactions clear my accounts.

*DISCLAIMER: I don't work for YNAB or Mint.

HomeBank looks pretty nice (:

Re: Money management & budget program?

Buddi has a small advantage, you're asked whether you want your files to be encrypted, and you don't have to do anything special for that. It's always nice to know your money/budget data are kept away from peeping eyes (of course the other financial apps can be put into encrypted folders, which is more secure; but if the peeping eyes are Windows users (and your data are not that sensitive), will they be able to find anything?)).
