Topic: [Solved]Statler Xfce on Netbook - Install fails

NOW SOLVED

Hi everybody, I have just downloaded Statler Xfce edition for a reinstall on my Tower, however, although I am a seasoned distro-junky, the Netbook is a recent addition to my collection and the most I have done is install Ubuntu UNR on it via USB.

The wife has agreed to let me replace UNR with Crunchbang (she uses it as well for study etc), so i thought i'd ask if anybody could recommend the best way to install that will cause minimum borkage. I see there are no USB images available, and I have had bad experiences with Unetbootin. I suppose I could rummage around and dig out an old external CD drive that I have.

The netbook is a:

Asus EeepPC 900 HD
Celeron 900 MHz
1Gb Ram
Intel 915 Graphics
Atheros wireless

I have searched the forum EeePc posts but am a little unsure about this specific model.

Thanks in advance.

Re: [Solved]Statler Xfce on Netbook - Install fails

With Unetbooting, I have not trouble to install Linux distributions on my EeePC. I try Ubuntu, UNR, #!, Mandriva, Debian, ... No troubles. What kind of issues do you have with it ?

You have other way like "usb-creator" (on Ubuntu), do you try it ?

Statler Xfce works a treat on my Aspire One big_smile

Re: [Solved]Statler Xfce on Netbook - Install fails

Thanks for the feedback guys.

First i'll try the copy to USB method and if that fails i'll go for unetbootin.

Currently trying to get Nvidia working on my tower with Staler Xfce

Re: [Solved]Statler Xfce on Netbook - Install fails

I wasnt able to use unetbootin with statler.
I tried it twice with no luck,,I used an external cd/dvd drive and it worked like a dream.

Ive got Openbox running on it.

Its an Acer Aspire One D250

Re: [Solved]Statler Xfce on Netbook - Install fails

Unetbootin didn't work on my eee 901 however the copy to USB method did work and I'm happy to say that this distro fixed my long-standing sound problem.

Re: [Solved]Statler Xfce on Netbook - Install fails

Well, after several tries, I couldn't get it to install.

I would create a partition (Ext4) then start the install. It started to install then it would go back to the install options menu and ask me what to do next, then complain about an "unclean" partition which still had files from a previous install.

This was on a partition that was deleted from Ubuntu using Gparted, then using the installer to create an Ext4 partition.

I am not sure why the install halts during the transfer of files after partitioning, but that's what I've got at the moment.

On the 160Gb harddrive I have WinXp, Ubuntu UNR, 35Gb spare for CB and a 1Gb Swap. The 35Gb partition was going to be used to share files between Xp and Ubu but was left empty. That's the one that got wiped and formatted.

Maybe i'll try again later with Ext3 and see how it goes, but I installed Statler Xfce on my tower from a CD to Ext4 with no problems, so it must be a USB/Netbook install problem.

PS: I have edited the first post to reflect that this is now a support thread.

Im not sure the ext 3 or 4 should matter in how it installs.

Heres a link to the,'' Copy to USB page'' for the people searching for such a thing.

Thanks for the link though. smile

PS: Wiki url's are weird, better to use the direct url on a forum:

Comes out like this:

I am going to wipe UNR and swap and tell Statler to use the free space, and see if that helps. I remember having an install problem on another laptop where I had to do this, and Statler created an Extended partition with /root and /swap inside.

Re: [Solved]Statler Xfce on Netbook - Install fails

Now posting from my EeePc WOOT! big_smile

Problem was formatting as I also had on one of my laptops. The solution is to delete the partition, then tell the partitioner to automatically partition the free space. Worked a treat.

Now am the proud owner of an Asus EeePc Crunchbag Statler Xfce Edition, thanks for eveybody's help. smile
