Topic: Minitube:youtube without flash

The thing that I love about the crunchbang forum are all the great tips and suggestions that you come across by reading the posts.

I came across reference to "youtube without flash" and thought that I'd check out this application. It's sweet and runs great on my samsung nc10 running xfce statler. Now even more power to my mighty atom netbook and nettop!

I followed the following guidelines for installing minitube on statler
http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=48653

I also installed the additional packages:
libphonon4
phonon-backend-xine

Enjoy.

Re: Minitube:youtube without flash

Thanks alot! I never knew of this before.
I did just use Ubuntu Lucid PPA for it though. Same difference.

Re: Minitube:youtube without flash

i know i was thinking about this last time
i was like "god damn these companies, they complicate everything such that even a new laptop lags when searching sites, if only there was a way to stream videos without flash"
so today i wanted to see what alternatives i can find and i found minitube and loved it, i came back to the forum to advertise it but i see that there already is a thread, its great, i didn't have to go through all that to get it
i just did the apt-get install minitube

Very strange, as a brief search in packages.debian.org and the statler repo shows no sign of minitube smile

Re: Minitube:youtube without flash

btw youtube is also working on a flash free project  but i'll stick to minitube for a while

YouTube HTML5 Video Player
This is an opt-in experiment for HTML5 support on YouTube. If you are using a supported browser, you can choose to use the HTML5 player instead of the Flash player for most videos. Your comments will help us improve and perfect the mixtures we're working on. So jump in, play around, and send your feedback directly to the brains behind the scenes.

Re: Minitube:youtube without flash

@bozhkov: i think you're right... afaik minitube isn't in the repos....

i tested the cpu and ram usage

minitube:
RAM: 96mb
CPU: 17%

google chrome (with adblocker and everything blocker to reduce lag):
RAM: 182mb
CPU: 63%

firefox a.k.a. iceweasel

Re: Minitube:youtube without flash

I've been using this app for months.  It really is a great tool.

Re: Minitube:youtube without flash

Quoting craigevil at Debian Forums (link provided above):

Why bother with building it?

All I did was download http://flavio.tordini.org/files/minitub ... 8.1.tar.gz extract it and execute minitube.

That's what I did, too. No need to install, as it seems.

I never use smilies, but there are exceptions that prove the rule wink
Now playing: Last.fm

Re: Minitube:youtube without flash

Hmmm..

The only binary version for Linux I find there gives me a segmentation fault when I try to run it. I am on #! 9.04.

Re: Minitube:youtube without flash

Running Statler A2, and I can install via synaptic. However: I get this with each thing I try to play: "Could not open media"!

"You bow to NOone..."

Re: Minitube:youtube without flash

Well. Seems that synaptic installs version 1.0.3, and according to the minitube website that doesn't work anymore! So I downloaded 1.1 from the website, and that works nicely! smile

Re: Minitube:youtube without flash

1.1.1 now (Squeeze)
It's new and as such Debian unstable soon has the new versions. Maybe it must wait a bit to get down to testing.

Re: Minitube:youtube without flash

Actually, like wuy just said, the fixed version is in Squeeze/Testing.  All is once again right with the world! cool

while ( ! ( succeed = try() ) );

Re: Minitube:youtube without flash

Downloading v1.1.1 now - 32 files.

But won't one still need "flash player" for web pages that have flash content?

Hmmmm, seems a bit of an overkill then. I installed it and it seems to be really slow to get things, but it is great, I'm watching Oh Canada (Who's Line is it Anyway - version):

NICE!

Re: Minitube:youtube without flash

I don't use Minitube but isn't it a bit of a hype? I mean, Totem browses Youtube as well.

Sector11, you may like this. Lots of options.

Re: Minitube:youtube without flash

I didn't even know Totem had a plugin for searching YouTube videos, but even so not everyone may want like/want Totem.

I don't use Totum and I kind of need flash anyway as my wife plays online flash games.

You and me both.  But it is an interesting option for Totem users.

Re: Minitube:youtube without flash

The first time (also last and only time) I tried Youtube in Totem on my netbook, it seized *hard*.  Mind you, this was in Ubuntu, so there could have been other factors; I'll have to try it in Statler and see if it still causes badness.

UPDATE:  In Statler, the Totem Youtube plugin downloads thumbnails of the videos, but reports permission errors when trying to play the videos.  Maybe this is related to what broke Minitube?

while ( ! ( succeed = try() ) );

Re: Minitube:youtube without flash

totem-plugins have been updated in Sid (a couple of days ago) and the YouTube plugin works great.
H.264 video in full screen with much less CPU use than Flash (in my sample video, but others may load WebM maybe).
