....The manual mill was a reasonable option for me... i hate the noise of many electric grinders....

Using it is part of a routine; part of a waking or walking meditation.  It is ritual.

Re: Coffee is a food group

I too am using a hand mill, a Dienes Model 88, with a rather beat-up looking Gaggia Baby espresso machine. I love the hand mill--it was a lot cheaper than a proper electric burr mill, it's quiet, and it gives me a little exercise first thing in the morning. Trying some new blends--right now it's a "True Bean" fair trade espresso. A surprisingly light roast for espresso.

I used to use one of those vacuum/syphon type pots but they are a bit of a nuisance to clean. Always afraid of breaking it in the sink.

So glad you didn't got to Starshi...bucks, I said Starbucks, I know I did.

I have had 2 mouthfuls of Starbucks, on a commercial flight.  Never again, I switched to tea (on the flight).

I know 'my' coffee cup has never been washed.  lol

OH YEA!  I can relate to that!

After a few years of single life and drinking and rinsing my cup I meet a lady.  She comes over one day and sees my mug.  She figured she's do me a favour and cleaned it unbeknown to me before bringing me a coffee.  It would not have been all THAT bad, but then she brings me a fresh cuppa...  OH YUK!!!!!!!  SOAP SUDS!

She washed it OK, but didn't rinse it very well.  Spitting bubbles for an hour!
That relationship never really got off the ground. (no pun intended)

OH YEA!!! To wake up to the smell of perking coffee in the morning, like vrkalak, 50 years ago.  Perking may not be good for coffee but it sure does smell good.

Funny, but every time I hear the name Starbuck I think of either the character in Moby Dick http://radio-weblogs.com/0118865/storie … gMyth.html or Battlestar Galactica http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kara_Thrace

and as slipshot said

There is no doubt it would wake you up!

I do, however, remember my first cup of Starbucks coffee, bought for me by an American Red Cross administrator:  couple of swallows and in moments flashing white lights spreading from my peripheral vision across my line of sight.  yikes  Didn't go away for two, maybe three hours.  Like I said, I grind my own now.  tongue

sad  None.  I have a cold and I'm drinking gallons of fruit juice and the odd tea with honey and lemon that my wife forces on me.

Besides, my doctor told me to cut back, I used to drink 5 to 6 pots of fresh ground - drip coffee a day.  Now I'm down to  a few mugs of java a day, but then I do drink a lot of maté but not today with this cold.

Maybe that's why I have a headache - lack of caffeine!

Ahhh Battlestar Galactica ---

she is a revised version of Lieutenant Starbuck from the 1978 Battlestar Galactica series.

I have not tried it cold.  Although I have some friends that come from Bolivia and they drink it cold.  I really should try that some day. It has however replaced my "morning" cuppa java as a breakfast routine.

Re: Coffee is a food group

From my personal experience . . . Starbucks hasn't a clue on how to make a cup of coffee.

Test my theory  >>  Go into a Starbucks and ask for a "cup of coffee" . . . the kid behind the counter won't know what to do.
He/she will most likely, have to ask the Manager, if they have that?

lol  What happened to a Coffee House . . . or a plain Cafe'

Most European cities know how to make coffee
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

I even like "cold" coffee . . . not Iced Coffee, but 'cold' coffee

Why is it I get the distinct feeling you are not joking here!

Now to find a Starbucks - I hope I can't.

Yea, I remember after a few years in Europe I had to return to Canada for a few weeks.  My first cup of coffee in the airport restaurant and I looked at it and asked the waitress;

"Where's the coffee? I can see the bottom of the cup!"
"Just got off the plane huh!  Welcome home!"  YEA! RIGHT!!!  What a welcome!

Most South American cities, countries, make a good coffee as well.

When a person tastes a good coffee --- nothing less will ever do!
And if it comes in a jar and you spoon it into a mug with hot water it is not good coffee! (opinion)

vrkalak wrote:

I have had cold coffee quite often!  My old (sniff broken now) pint sized coffee mug always had cold coffee in the bottom half if I was sitting at the computer doing something.  Nothing wrong with cold coffee.

And none of this "Why didn't you drink that half first?" jokes either. lol

Re: Coffee is a food group

Lately I've noticed at the small natural foods market where I shop for fruits, vegetables and coffee that they are now offering coffee mixes.  For example, Light Roast Mexican Mix and Dark Roast Java Mix.  Sumatran mixes and Guatemalan mixes.  They've even got a barrel of their own Mystery Mix for about $9.99USD per pound.  Looks dark and exotic and have yet to try it.  neutral

Now, like some others here I'm very much a kid in a candy store when I go into a bulk coffee market.  Lately I've decided on my own version of a Mixed Mix:  a bit of this one and some of that one [ones I've known and enjoyed over the years] and each week it's something different.  smile  Sometimes I'll empty the beans into a bowl when I get home so it really is mixed and on other occasions just leave them layered in the bag.  It's always a taste treat when the flavors, the types of roasts change in your cup throughout the week.  big_smile

Now I have never tried that "un-mixed mixed" (layered) coffee combo.  That sounds good.

Coffee mixes are great, but have nothing on creating your own.  I use to take a little note book with me:

500g X, mix in 250g Y & 250g - Z  then rate it from 1-10

This way I always had a record or as I named the notebook: "My Coffee Recipes"

I also use to put a few drops of vanilla extract in the empty pot and then start the machine.  Found that to be much better than the vanilla flavoured coffee.

I really wish that they had bulk food stores here, I miss the bulk food coffee section.  Mind you, the coffee that can be bought here has a lot more flavour than what one finds in Canadian bulk food stores.  A friend, from Bolivia,  promised me some Bolivian coffee next week and he said it is "strong".

Mixed coffees or different varieties of coffee is OK . . . but, one thing, I can't stand is "flavored" coffee.  sad

Mocha, mint, vanilla, hazelnut, cinnamon, orange ... or whatever other flavors they add, are all good spices and/or flavors . . . but. NOT in MY coffee!!!!  mad

hahahaha Tom use to say the same thing!  NOT IN MY COFFEE!  To be honest I haven't added vanilla in over 11 years.  Coming here and tasting good coffee has made the world of difference. Right now I'm drinking Sensaciones - Torrado Intenso - made by Bonafide here in Argentina.  VERY strong coffee, without the burnt taste smell, the way I like it.

And there is only one smell better than "the smell of fresh coffee brewing in the morning"  and that's "the smell of fresh coffee brewing ALL morning"  big_smile

Re: Coffee is a food group

I have been living in Italy for a couple of decades. They are masters at toasting the beans. A long time ago I used to be a heavy coffee user at breakfast: a whole Moka coffee pot for 6 to start the day.
Now, true to my origins, I am a tea man, though I occasionally  indulge in an expresso at the local caffe'.

If it is true that tea is some sort of elixir, then man I have still got plenty of living to do. Ehm... on second thoughts perhaps I should drink more alcohol, don't want to overstay my welcome!

Like the title says, "Coffee is a Food Group" it doesn't say you can't drink anything else and not be welcome here.  I love a good cup of Twinning's Earl Grey or Breakfast tea or ... well, you get the idea.  And I now drink "mate" as well.  And both tea and mate both have caffeine in them so I'm getting my fix no matter what I drink.

I use to drink 5 to 6 pots (12 cups) of coffee a day, and was grinding my own.  I'd keep the beans in the freezer to keep them fresh longer, not that they ever got 'old' around me.  big_smile

And I have to admit, waking up to the smell of coffee in the morning is pure bliss!

Have you tried stirring it with a cinnamon stick, leaving it in the coffee, and using dark brown sugar?

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm ...

or this one:  Mexican-Style Sweetened Black Coffee (Café de Olla)

  • 8 cups water

  • 2/3 cup packed light brown sugar

  • 1 teaspoon molasses

  • 2 (3-inch) cinnamon sticks

  • 1 cup medium-grind coffee (not espresso)

Bring water, brown sugar, molasses, and cinnamon sticks to a boil in a 4-quart pot over moderate heat, stirring occasionally until sugar is dissolved. Stir in coffee and boil 5 minutes. Pour through a fine-mesh sieve into a heatproof pitcher or clean pot, discarding coffee grinds and cinnamon sticks.

Found it: here!
