Anyone else think chromium or chrome is ready to be the default browser?
It's my default browser (on my Netbook), and I'm happy with it ! It is ready to be use, and now you could find all the extensions you love, like in Firefox ![]()
No thanks.
I don't want google inspecting all my traffic.
I want to use a proxy.
There are a lot of add-ons that are not yet available on chrome.
I can't customize the toolbar and tab-bar on chrome to be really, really thin, giving maximum screen to content, like I can of FF.
There's no stop button on chrome, so I can't interrupt a page load part-way through, when I've already got the content I need, and don't want the rest of the images.
Those are just off the top of my head. Also I think the 'stable', 'recommended' version will always be the google binary version, which to me is not compatible with open-source.
Without proper proxy support in Linux it doesn't get a run on my work systems. By proper proxy support I mean not having to use gnome or kde control panels to configure it.
I prefer firefox (iceweasel/swiftfox) to chromium... i don't like the google policy on privacy...
Is it just me, or does the font rendering in Chrome suck? Whenever I have used it, it really strained my eyes with fuzzy fonts. I spent a while looking for a fix, but I could not find one. I did read some bug reports that seemed to indicate that it is a known issue. ![]()
^It's not just you.
I did read some bug reports that seemed to indicate that it is a known issue.
Its been supposedly fixed though some people still experience the bug:

The default browser should be something in the Debian Squeeze repositories, in my opinion.
Eh, chromium is nice and all, but I'm not sure I want it to be my default browser.
But then again, this is coming from the guy who makes installing uzbl a first priority.
First of all I hope Chrome, or Chromium, is never the default in any Linux distro. Time's too short to list all the reasons why. That said, I have it on my system (Chromium) because there's a quirky news agency server that won't let me login with two accounts (for two languages) at the same time from one browser, so when I need to do this I must fire up another (beside my FF/Iceweasel). I tried Midori and whatnot but had to grudgingly settle for Chromium.
Now, as for the fonts, they were horrible when I used Ubuntu no matter what I did, however here I run a script to make fonts render sharp system-wide (tired old eyes thing), and this is what they look like in Chromium: http://img690.imageshack.us/img690/5958 91280x.png
As for the speed of Chromium I see this argument as little better than pure hype. I don't care if it takes FF a nanosecond less to launch. I pretty much work from my browser and what concerns me is what it can do once it's launched. If anyone can recommend an equivalent of Tabmixplus for instance for Chrome that'd be great.
I don't want google inspecting all my traffic..
Chromium is not Chrome, it's Open-Source and spyware-free ...
Thank you for not spreading false information! (http://www.chromium.org/Home "Chromium is an open-source browser project that aims to build a safer, faster, and more stable way for all users to experience the web") ...
If you see in the code-source of Chromium "something put by google to inspecting all your traffic", let me know that ... ![]()
In Chrome, you may be right, but not in the Chromium version of the Google Browser ... ![]()

Sorry for you but :
Chromium will be the default browser in UNE 10.10 : http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2010/05/chro

It, and many other applications should be left as optional. The only complaint I've got against Chrome, Chromium, Iron is that on my personal device it's too big, especially its tabs. Whose idea was that?!? What I mean [without flaming] is that some people have chosen a smaller personal computer and not everything will fit, not everything will look good. AND it's not as fast as everyone says but then my perception is entirely subjective and my only experience is on this original eeepc.
So, no: I think it should not be default on Statler 10. ![]()
EDIT - sloppy sentence structure

This.
It does seem to open alot faster than iceweasel, and maybe be just a tad faster sufing.
In order to make it look right on both my CB systems I had to install ttf-bitstream-vera from the repos then in .config/google-chrome/Default/Preferences I had to add the line:
"minimum_font_size": 14 on my laptop and
"minimum_font_size": 15 on the desktop just to get it to look halfway decent. The lack of a stop button and the fact that when I click the config icon I sometimes miss and go alittle too high and hit the close button irritates the crap outta me. Yes I am old and my eyes arent so good.
Erm, actually those look like the exact same fuzzy fonts I normally get. ![]()
well, if you want a even faster browser than chrome, with good font rendering and a stoploadingbutton: Opera. oh and it has a lot more features like dragonfly and the new beta 10.60b is fast. Tabs open in half the time (60 ms against 120 ms), benchmarks like peacemaker and flog canvas raytracer get higher rating in opera. I'd op for that if it was open source
but otherwise: just stick with iceweasel
edit: just made it understandable

Or, hey, an even faster browser, uzbl works just as well, for all your browsing needs. Although it's a bit bare-boned.

I'm loving Opera 10.6 or whatever (the new one!) in Windows. I'm waiting for them to release it for Linux, though.

...so it would seem that there is strong consensus that there are better candidates for a default browser than Chromium?

It would seem.
Recently I use Midori exclusively. I love it. But I still think that Iceweasel/Firefox is the better option for a default browser.
People know it, even Windows users, and it has a massive library of 3rd party add-ons. It feels very reliable.
Starting to feel a bit bad for the Chromium UI designers and devs - to me the entire point of their topbar and tabs design is meant to effectively conserve real estate for content. That being said, how does UNE's (or all Ubuntu) newly left justified Min/Max/Close buttons work in their design?
Back to the topic, people who've been following Debian or even Statler development understand the differences (or lack thereof) between Iceweasel and Firefox. But for a new convert, would it be better to make default the more "known" browser? Even if under an alias?
Of course, that could also be filed under the "Make a Perfect #! Desktop" thread.
Edit: On 2nd thought, I'm sure FF licensing wouldn't like a FF shortcut pointing to Iceweasel ...

There are extensions for a lot of shortcomings of the basic Chrome/Chromium browser. I use 'Smooth Scroll' to make scrolling, well, smoother and to accelerate scrolling. Then the 'Change Colors' extension lets you tweak the web sites' appearance as you want much like in Firefox (eliminates the font problem I had with Chromium). This extension overrides the Chromium's options settings. Not to forget the 'Earthquake Notifier' plugin of course (Oh look, another five 4.5> earthquakes around the Pacific Ocean!).
