Debugging Alpha 2 UNetbootin installations (Page 1 of 3)

I should probably go first.

Version 471-1 from the Debian Squeeze repository resulted in several successful installations.

I used Unetbootin 4.19 in Windows 7 to make my USB stick. Statler i686 Openbox. Chose default in the UNetbootin boot menu.

I didn't get my username added to the sudoers file. Fixed that myself with visudo. Sh terminal was fine though.
The repos weren't updated during cb-welcome. I had to do that manually.

The crunchbang login screen also disappeared and was replaced with what I think is the default debian screen. Don't know if this because I added the repos myself before I got the "default" Statler A2 repos from the forums.

But I did not have any trouble with the cd drivers (that we had on Statler A1) during install. That was flawless. No fix needed for me.

Unetbootin version: 471-1

First time I installed, I selected "Default" in the Unetbootin menu. Once installed, I noticed the the post-install script didn't install anything. Ran "apt-get update" and noticed it was looking for sources inside the CD. Also noticed that all my USB thumbdrives were mistaken for optical drives (sdb instead of the usual sdf)
It seems selecting "Default" in the Unetbootin menu installs a live-session onto the hard-drive.

Ran the install again, and this time selected "Text Install". It then proceeded to install itself properly and everything worked like it was supposed to.

1 thing I did notice:
Once I installed and ran rcconf to disable services I didn't need, I noticed 2 services:- "live boot" and "live config", even on my second install where everything worked right.
Not sure whether this is normal, but I've never seen these services in Statler Alpha1 or any other version of Debian that I've encountered. I assume it went and installed services related to the Live environment. Anyway, I've disabled the 2 without any consequence.

Unetbootin 471-1

Installed twice first one with default , and second one was regular  text install.They both worked very well.

I tried the expert version and there were some specific questions I answered  positive and I messed up  during the expert installation  option

I already  knew that I am no expert

Similar situation here but with Statler amd64 xfce edition...

I used unetbootin 356-1 on Ubuntu Karmic 9.10 to put crunchbang-10-alpha-02-openbox-amd64.iso on a 1gig Toshiba usbkey.

I chose the live cd option from the menu & booted my Asus 1201T Netbook with it. Everything ok except no rs8192se_pci drivers for the Wireless. I'll make another post about this in the right forum.

I'll be trying a manual install to a 16gb SD card shortly...

OK. had to choose 'text expert' install as cdrom wasn't detected with regular 'text' install. That didn't help either & neither did secdroid's post here: http://crunchbanglinux.org/forums/post/74453/#p74453 so I switched to a terminal (Ctrl+Alt+F2) and symlinked /dev/cdrom to the usb key:

ln -s /dev/sdb /dev/cdrom

Then I was able to install OK.

I chose grub2 & used the MBR of the SD card. After rebooting & selecting the card via a BIOS menu it booted into #!

(Although grub2 detected the Ubuntu 10.04 install on the hard drive (sda) it did not append it to the grub menu)

So it seems so far like having an up to date Unetbootin (471) is the key to success

As far as that, it doesn't have the option to specify an ISO file, only the option to install from a local copy of an ISO from their list.  Crunchbang 9.04 is listed but not Statler.

Ok, looking again I was wrong.  The last option for choosing a distro is "Install some other Linux Distro from an ISO file".  I've been conditioned by Unetbootin to look for a "Choose an ISO file" option, outside of the "Choose an ISO to download and install" option.

OK, this time it worked well.

Universal-USB-Installer

ISO: Openbox Alpha2 i686
System: Desktop AMD Athlon 2.7 Ghz, 2G RAM

Strange enough is that I can write here on the forums, but the cb-welcome script complains about no working internet connection. Any way to get around this?

Today I installed #!10 on a low-budget netbook, using unetbootin-417 on a 2GB USB stick. I had to set fb=false in the grub options, but that's no biggie. I had the disk partition managed by the installer, but the installation didn't get past ~80%. Tried it 3 times. The 4th time I made a manual partitioning and it perfectly installed. So, this is maybe worth a try if a guided partitioning was executed which led to an incomplete install.
