Topic: [Xfce] New Task Manager in Sid Repository

The Xfce4 Task Manager [now version 1.0.0-1] is available in the Sid repository.  Notice the many changes:

Across the top a CPU and memory monitor have been added, creating a more full-featured effect.  I particularly like the mouse-over effect [SEE the task-bar] which gives your usage at a glance.

Here http://mmassonnet.blogspot.com/2010/06/ … nager.html is additional information from the developer's blog.

snowpine talks about using a mixed testing-unstable environment here http://crunchbanglinux.org/forums/topic … onversion/ but I reckon you could just add the repository, select the new task manager and be done with it.  I've got a new toy to play with...  big_smile

EDIT - added link

Did I hear my name? smile

If you are thinking "I'll add the Sid repo to my software sources, install the app I want, then delete the Sid repo from my sources," I don't recommend it. sad Basically, it means you will not get updates for the package you install; not only that, but if it pulls in any dependencies from Sid (I imagine in this case it would have some Xfce dependencies), they will not be updated either.

Here is the safe way to do it: http://wiki.debian.org/AptPreferences
And a more detailed discussion: http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?t=15612

By setting up a properly-pinned, mixed Testing/Unstable system, you ensure that your apps (and their dependencies) will always receive timely updates from the proper repository.

Please note: The above ONLY applies if you have edited your Statler sources.list to use "testing" instead of "squeeze." The default Statler setup is to become Debian Stable once Squeeze is released, and Stable should never be mixed with Testing or Unstable. If you are using Debian Stable, you should explore Debian Backports instead: http://backports.org

Personally, I have very little actual experience mixing Testing/Unstable or using apt-pinning. I am 100% comfortable running "pure" Sid (in fact I prefer it to Testing) on the systems where I need up-to-date apps.

I stand corrected on pinning, something I did and failed to mention.
