Topic: iBus for SCIM?

Today I installed Statler A2 and tried the new input method named 'iBus'. http://code.google.com/p/ibus/
Its configuration was much easier than SCIMs (I use Chinese Pinyin input) and was installed in short time.

sudo apt-get install ibus

brings the framework, for a Chinese input I additionally installed ibus-pinyin. I am sure that Hangul, Anthy, etc. can be installed the same way (for example ibus-anthy) but I didn't try it.

Of course fonts have to be installed separately. After installing I added scim-daemon to the autostart and rebooted the PC.

Proof: 大家好! big_smile

It would be helpful for fellow users if somebody wants to give it a try and install some input methods of their native language to check? Thank you!

Re: iBus for SCIM?

Just recently got a box with Ubuntu Karmic on it, and IBUS was already installed. Used 'im-switch' to change from SCIM to IBUS and it seems to work very nicely with Anthy for Japanese. As you say, the setup is simpler than SCIM, and when I try it on Statler I'm looking forward to losing some of SCIM's bugginess. smile

btw

After installing I added scim-daemon to the autostart...

Didn't you mean 'ibus-daemon' or something?

Re: iBus for SCIM?

John,
of course you are right! I must have had too much rice wine big_smile
But glad it works for you well, too. I have just one application (based on qt4) which doesn't accept input from iBus (and also SCIM). Probably something which can be ironed out with qt-config.

Re: iBus for SCIM?

Anyway, I do recommend im-switch for playing with input methods. Easier than adding stuff to your autostart or .profile files.

Re: iBus for SCIM?

Thanks, I check it later on the other PC. I wasn't sure about the daemon, maybe it is not needed at all. I try different variants when I am back on #! smile

Re: iBus for SCIM?

...ooops... hmm
In the next installation I install only iBus.
But maybe in iBus there is some "part" help Scim to work ?

Re: iBus for SCIM?

If I understand right, scim and ibus are alternative ways of accessing your input method. In my case that's Anthy for Japanese (for you it would be something else for Chinese), so on Ubuntu I use Scim, Anthy and something called scim-anthy. On Statler I've got Ibus, Anthy, ibus-anthy... but no Scim.  So if you're using Ibus I think you can uninstall scim.

Re: iBus for SCIM?

Thank you for your suggestion !
In Ubuntu 10.10 I use  Scim-pinyin for write in semplified chinese.
I can remove Scim from #! when I'm at home, but I'm little bit scared wink

Re: iBus for SCIM?

Interesting read, I had to Google to find out what the heck you guys were talking about.  smile

Not needing "non-ASCII" characters I don't need to change .... but just for info:

Package: im-switch (1.20)
http://packages.debian.org/unstable/x11/im-switch

Input method switch framework

im-switch provides the framework to configure and to switch the input method on X Window System depending on the locale. This input method is the essential mechanism for Japanese, Chinese and Korean (CJK) language to enter their non-ASCII native characters.

Some input methods such as SCIM support not only one of these CJK languages but support almost all languages simultaneously by dynamically switching keyboard modes with GUI.

By installing this package, the most desirable input method and its backend conversion engine are automatically configured with both XIM or IMmodule mechanism.

You can further customize your input method with 'im-switch' command.

Re: iBus for SCIM?

谢谢 (thanks)  Sector11 !
This is an interesting news.
I'm not a good chinese writer/speaker but my wife is Chinese and we like use linux also for write/speak to her relatives and our friends.
If you want to write using non latin character/alphabet you need to use Scim or iBus

Ciao paolo

Prego. (请 or 請 = Google translate)  I understand your need and John's as well.
It's interesting to know that if I want, Chinese, Japanese, Korean and quite possible some Arabic characters in the future, that this is the way to go.

No, I don't speak Italian, my wife's grandfather was Italian.  big_smile

保罗,你好! you can remove scim, and install ibus together with ibus-pinyin. don't need to be afraid, ibus is lovely!
greetings from China to Italy big_smile
Edit: If you're using Firefox or Iceweasel, I warmly recommend you following add-on: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/58844/
It translates in both directions every sentence or word which is double-clicked in Firefox. HOT! smile

Re: iBus for SCIM?

大家好!! I'm the one who started the "HOWTO Configure SCIM to enable Chinese input" wiki big_smile

If you are using Ubuntu base, ibus is the way to go.

I am using Debian Squeeze, SCIM is working fine here.

Anyway, if anyone have a confirmed way of configuring CJK input, why not update the wiki and make the world a better place. big_smile

Better still, maybe we can interest Corenominal to have CJK input configured in Crunchbang by default.
