Topic: New Crunchee user

Hello #! world!
A bit about myself:  I've been using linux operating systems for about 3 years now(still somewhat of a noobie to anything non deb based((rpm, etc.))), and migrated over to Cruncheee for my new eeepc (s101 32gb ssd) for college.  I'm 18 years old, from the USA, and traveling all over the world for the next few years. I look forward to getting to know the community more, and hopefully asking some valuable questions (and possibly, in time, answering some).

Re: New Crunchee user

Welcome to the forums!

I hope you mean "CrunchBang" and not "Cruncheee" because all support for Cruncheee 8.10 ended in April, when its parent distro (Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex) reached its scheduled end-of-life. Cruncheee will not receive any more updates, bug fixes, security patches, or new applications.

I'd strongly recommend that you install the current stable release (CrunchBang 9.04, supported through Oct. 2010) or the testing release (the Debian Squeeze-based CrunchBang Statler, currently Alpha 2). Just a suggestion to get you the best possible support. smile

Re: New Crunchee user

Ah, I didn't know CrunchEEE was a dead distro.  Is crunchbang going to have any optimization for netbooks in future releases?  Or is it already optimized for them with each release?
That's strange, I thought I downloaded and installed crunchee, but I believe it's crunchbang.  lsb_release -a gives me the following
Distributor ID:    Ubuntu
Description:    Ubuntu 9.04
Release:    9.04
Codename:    jaunty

Which I assume means I'm on the jaunty version of CrunchBang.
Is Statler alpha 2 stable enough for every day network/word processing/media play use?
I'd love to install that, debian-squeeze is amazing.

Can you be more specific what types of "optimizations" you are looking for? #! has never used Maximus or any of that Ubuntu Netbook junk. wink

Looks that way. smile

I'd say you are a good candidate to test the Alpha. smile I find it to be fairly stable (with a lower case s) but it will not become Stable (with a capital S) until Team Debian has squashed every last bug and declared Squeeze to be the new Debian Stable release.

If it didn't use any optimizations, what was the core difference from crunchee and crunchbang?  Was it just like the "lite" version?  I figured it might have some netbook specific programs or something along those lines, and just overall smaller install size.

Well, stable with a lower case s is definitely all I need to have.  I'll download it immediately and start fooling around.

A number of scripts that corenominal the developer included.  It's all over my head but it works nicely.  wink

You'll be glad you did.  OT:  wish I could go on a walk-about.  hmm

EDIT - forgot to say hi!

Re: New Crunchee user

Cruncheee included the array kernel as well as some tools for EeePCs:

The latest kernels nowadays work very well with netbooks though.

Oh and welcome to the forums bardiel smile

Enjoy it!

You might find some of the info here helpful if you run into problems with Debian-based #! on your EEE (but I don't think you will; most stuff should work out of the box): http://wiki.debian.org/DebianEeePC
