Topic: Xfce and Openbox.. Same speed?

Wondering if i should use statler alpha 2 on my hp mini 210 because of the eye-candy, themes, and automated menu ( i think thats in xfce right? )
But im loving the speed of 9.04 and statler 2 openbox.

I just want to know, is xfce the same speed at bootup as openbox?
I know xfce is a desktop environment, and is basically alot different, and openbox is a window manager..

Please help me #! gurus!

I once installed gentoo. It asked me for a sacrifice and would not install itself unless I gave him my neighbor's first born and my best bottle of Whiskey.  -Awebb 2011

Re: Xfce and Openbox.. Same speed?

Statler has a very lightweight Xfce setup so performance is very good.

Xfce has lots of GUI utilities (for example to change keyboard layout, mouse speed, etc) whereas Openbox may not have an equivalent.

Also the way corenominal set Xfce up, it looks almost exactly like the Openbox setup. Both use the tint2 panel, conky and have right-click menus (Xfce's menu is dynamic rather than static though).

You can install both, and switch between them depending on your mood. I have not noticed a speed difference; maybe on very old/slow hardware it would be noticeable?

Re: Xfce and Openbox.. Same speed?

The weight is about the same on each. Really, go with XFCE if you want the auto menu and the gui configuration apps. And in this case, xfce isn't much different than openbox.

Re: Xfce and Openbox.. Same speed?

Could someone confirm whether or not xfce offers the same decorate/undecorate window options that openbox does?

Xfce does not have decorate/undecorate application window capabilities as Openbox ... ATM.

It does, via xfwm themes. They work with GTK like Openbox themes for Openbox WM.

Edit: that said big_smile, I likely misunderstood, sorry. Anyway since you can undecorate Openbox windows by making changes in rc.xml, perhaps if you look at wherever xfwm config files are, this can also be done.

Re: Xfce and Openbox.. Same speed?

the best thing about the xfce edition is auto updating menus:D

What vrkalak said seems to be so although I've noticed that the terminals, i.e., xfce4-terminal and terminator can both be undecorated on Statler 10 alpha-2 Xfce.

When set to a lesser opacity they look nice on a rain-gray or misty background or desktop .
