Topic: What's your internet speed?

So i'm just curious what everyone's current internet connection speed and price is.  I live in Alaska, about 10 miles out of Fairbanks (pretty much right in the middle of the state), and for $50 a month, i get a 320kbps/256kbps DSL connection that likes to crap out on me every day.  I'm especially curious to see what some of the #!ers out of the US are getting for an internet connection, since the US is a bit on the low end of broadband speeds (and i'm obviously at the bottom end of the broadband range).  At my previous house up here, i was getting a 4Mbps/1Mbps ISDN connection for about $75 a month.  However the cable company up here puts a monthly data limit on cable internet unless you get the "ultimate package" that includes television and phone service and bumps the bill up to about $150 a month.

they advertize it as 12 mb/s download / 2mb/s upload and it costs 12$ / month wireless included
my sister has a 24 mb/s / 4 mb/s connection and her costs 16 $ / month without wireless (the wireless feature is 2.5 usd / month extra)
the tv/phone/internet pack with 12mb/s costs 29.5$ (2.5 extra for wireless)
and for the tv/phone/internet with 24mb/s you have to pay 38.8 (extra for wireless of course)

Not being on the same side of The Pond, but Denmark:

They advertise this as 10 mb/s down and 1 mb/s up.

This incl. IP-phone, wireless and a very nice Homebox-router for about 40$ a month.

Re: What's your internet speed?

I haven't done of of these SpeedTests in a few months.

For my main PC (#!Statler with Openbox, amd-64) with a Wireless USB Modem, I was getting around 7.3 Mb/s . . . I still seem to be averaging around there.

My old Gateway Laptop (Puppy 4.3) with Wireless Wifi was 4 times as fast  (don't know why)

Oh yeah . . . I'm in the southwestern part of the US

I pay $40 a month for that. I hate Time Warner... it's the only ISP that serves my apartment complex...

Thought next week, I'm moving to a new place and we're switching to AT&T - $20 a month for double the speed.

Edit: Now that I've thought about it, I've never seen a download speed above 350 kb/s.... something's not right there...

Re: What's your internet speed?

My latest test was 1.17 down and 0.15 up. We have Sprint PCS mobile broadband cards out here in the boonies for 65 bucks a pop for the "real" unlimited use that they soon discontinued shortly after we signed our 2 year deal. The speed varies ALOT, and they are real annoying. I just found out that DSL is now available here, so when our contract expires we should be doing a tad better.

Well at least i'm getting what they advertise.  Supposedly one of the wireless companies up here is building a few more towers, and should be able to offer me a 1Mbps connection for 85 a month with unlimited usage and no contract.  However, we're signed up for a one year contract with the DSL.  Hopefully in a year that tower will be up though.

We do the Triple-Play deal with Optimum Online, I think it's like 25 dollars each a month with iO, Optimum Voice and Optimum Online. Unlimited bandwidth and all that too so I can download as many distros as my little heart desires.

Re: What's your internet speed?

Paying $65AU/month.
Data = 12gb on-peak, 24gb off-peak. If I go over the data limit I get speed limited to 56k for the rest of the month.

I am from Romania, Cluj-Napoca but I tested on Frankfurt, Germany and London, UK to be sure that I test my internet speed, not metropolitan speed. Also my peering with US is very good and with Australia, Canberra is acceptable, considering it's in the other end of the world.

I pay 13$ for each month for 100 Mb/s broadband and a 3G modem with 7.2 Mb/s. (when it's night I can download with maximum 90 mb/s and upload with like 30 Mb/s). Unlimited bandwith.

Not bad at all for a 10Mb connection at peak time.....

Re: What's your internet speed?

So here's the internet connection i get at work:
http://www.speedtest.net/result/903358565.png

It's definitely interesting to see how much people's connections vary.  70Mbps is pretty intense, I can't imagine having a connection with that much bandwidth.  I was pretty happy with my previous 4Mbps connection and thought that was smoking fast tongue

Re: What's your internet speed?

@Invictus51, I can't imagine having a connection that slow, even my 3G modem or the internet on my phone is way faster than that.

Also I think you are lucky that you have internet in Alaska.

Yeah this is by far the worst internet i've ever had (dial up excluded), but i'm trying to think of somewhere in the state where you can't get internet and am coming up with nothing.  I have some friends that live far enough out that they aren't connected to the power grid and have to generate their own electricity, and even they have internet.  Although it's only about as fast as mine...  Still even in the remote "fly in only" communities in alaska, people have internet, albeit satellite internet.  I think the fastest connection offered here in fairbanks is 10Mbps connection, and it would cost about $200 a month with the associated cable and phone package, not to mention you have to be relatively close to town (e.g. within 5-10 of the center of town).

I'm wondering... with a 70Mbps connection, do you regularly max out a download server's speed limit?  I know i've downloaded stuff in the past where the server had limited the speed of the download to about 100Kb/s, just curious if you run into that a lot.

It's not much and won't get more (I'm bound a network structure I can't really influence at all). I wonder about the horrible ping - in, like, Teamspeak clients is usually around a bit lower.

I almost always max out the servers upload limit, with peer to peer networks I can download with upto 12 Mb/s and from most servers with 5 Mb/s if I am lucky, if I am not I download only with 1 or 2 Mb/s or even 300-500kb/s.

Also from most repositories I download with 6-8 Mb/s.
Some are exceptions, when the file is small the speed can reach 12 Mb/s.

Also I tested today on Hungary :

The server distance is 250 miles though so it could just be the distance.

Re: What's your internet speed?

Yeah smile but its strange that the ping and distance isnt the same on the tests, must try again with same server.
Just took the default one for the test

£10/mnth ($16/€12) for internet only.

The time's wrong: it was 17.50 (BST) when I took the test.

Ping and Speed test have different servers and the default is usually the closest to you. They probably don't have a ping test that's 100 miles away like they did for the speed test.

This connection costs me $26/mo, it's not the fastest available here, but I'm not willing to pay $40-50/mo for faster when this gets the job done (eventually) for me.  Beside, we just recently were given double the bandwidth we used to have, without a price increase!  BTW, it's cable.  My house is too far from the switching unit for DSL to work, otherwise I could get about double the bandwidth for about the same cost.
