Need help with Grub and EasyBCD

Hi, I'm really pretty new to Linux, but I have taken a class before in learning the command line somewhat. So anyways, I was reccomended by a friend to try out this distribution. I'm having some issues installing it alongside my current boot of XP, Vista, 7. I'm using easyBCD to add in the options of being able to use that bootloader over Grub. From this guide (http://neosmart.net/wiki/display/EBCD/Ubuntu) it says I should be installing Grub to the partition I'm installing Crunchbang onto instead of the MBR. It lists a way to do it in Ubuntu, but I'm not sure how to do it on CrunchBang. The last time I tried installing it led me to error 17 on grub instead of letting me use the existing boot loader and just adding the linux entry in manually as I had originally planned. I assume it wrote to the MBR. If anyone can assist me with a fix or lead me in the right direction, I will be eternally grateful. Thanks!
